"Education as the Gateway to Women's Economic Security"

St Louis Frontenac Hilton Hotel

The conference began with registration starting
at 3 pm on Friday.  At 7 pm there was a wine and
cheese reception honoring state presidents and former regional directors.  On Saturday morning Saint Louis County Director Charlie Dooley welcomed conference attendees to Saint Louis, pointing out some of the popular tourist attractions to visit.

Before starting the conference, local Girl Scouts
presented the Color Guard; and Jan Scott, member of the Saint Louis Branch and AAUW of Missouri board member, played "The Star Spangled Banner" on one of her many flutes, while attendees provided the words.

AAUW President Ruth Sweetser gave the keynote address, "Education as the Gateway to Women's Economic Security."  She was elected president of AAUW in 2005.  As member and twice chair of the national AAUW College-University Relations Committee (1998-2003), she increased institutional membership by 25 percent.  She has been a member of the Gender Equity Advisory Committee of the Illinois State Board of Education since 1995.  Appointed to the Commission on the Status of Women in Illinois in 1997, she chaired its Education and Training Working Group.
