At the Legal Advocacy Fund Banquet on Saturday evening, AAUW LAF Plaintiff Lisa Simpson was introduced by Berta Seitz, past AAUW LAF committee member. Simpson, a former student at the University of Colorado at Boulder (CU) from 2000 to 2004, spoke about her experience, She sued the university under of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 for failing to remedy the sexually hostile environment on campus that led to her sexual assault and harassment by university football recruits and players. Another female student filed a separate complaint against the university (now consolidated with Simpson’s) that alleged similar facts. Lisa has received $16,085 to date: $12,000 from LAF, $4,000 from the Marguerite Rawalt Legal Defense Fund, and $85 in donor-designated funds. |

On Sunday morning Pat Shores, Ballwin-Chesterfield (MO) Branch, and Yvonne Morrison, AAUW MO Educational Foundation chair, sponsored a walk/run for the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund for Women and Girls. (Note Pat's "cool" shirt, which all participants received.) The Eleanor Roosevelt Fund supports groundbreaking research that has changed the way scholars, policy-makers, and the general public think about the experiences and needs of girls and women. Over the past decade, the AAUW Educational Foundation has taken the lead in producing cutting-edge research on women and girls and on equity in education. This research has brought public awareness to the differences in the quality and quantity of education among girls and boys, as well as ensuring that girls are prepared in an increasingly technological world. |
